Finding a car repair shop in your area is fairly simple. All you have to do is pick up the yellow pages or search one of the major search engines for car repair or mechanic shop. In most cases dozens or even hundreds of shops will come up for you to hire. Many of these shops claims to be the best and some might even show you some positive reviews to make their point. Besides taking a mechanic shop's word that they're the best, what other ways are there to help you decide? Here's a list of simple ways to decide which car repair service really is right for you.
1.) Ask For An Estimate - No mechanic shop can give you an accurate estimate over the phone. If they claim they can then you should stay away from them. To say so would be dishonest which is exactly the type of mechanic shop you want to stay away from - a dishonest one. But they can give you a rough estimate. If you believe your starter has given out, then you should ask how much that service would cost assuming that's what needs to be done. If the price is right then you should move on to step 2.
2.) Search For Reviews - While not all reviews reflect the quality of a mechanic shop's service, they're still worth looking at. If the mechanic has a bunch of 5 star reviews, then perhaps their services are what these reviews say they are. However, you shouldn't stop there and assume that they're honest. Check with the BBB to make sure there aren't any major complaints that haven't been resolved. The failure of a business to resolve these complaints proves that they don't care about their customers.
3.) Get A Solid Estimate - Before the car repair shop gets to work on your vehicle, ask them to give you a solid estimate. You want to know exactly how much the end job will cost. Allowing a mechanic to get to work on your vehicle without giving you a solid estimate beforehand is a recipe for disaster. And if a mechanic doesn't automatically do that, chances are they're not honest.
4.) Ask Other Customers - When you pull up to the shop, there's a good chance there are going to be other customers waiting for their vehicle. If you get a chance ask some of these customers if this is their first time coming to the shop. If not, then that tells you that they were pleased with some of the previous work of that shop.
5.) Ask Tough Questions - The fact of the matter is most mechanics with a lousy track record will act nice when you pull up. They want your business and will try to conceal their true colors. The only way to release their true character is to start asking tough questions. Ask them how long they've been in business and whether or not all of the mechanics in their shop are licensed mechanics. A good mechanic will answer all of your questions with a smile. One that isn't will likely get quickly annoyed and might even tell you to get lost. It's better to know their true character ahead of time than to learn it after they throw that huge, unexpected invoice your way.
